Mural by Mshl

This work brings together a street-art vocabulary and a urban approach. Its value does not come from applying decoration to architecture: the mural gains meaning through its scale, its surface and the way it is encountered in a real place.

Active since 2009 · Neighborhood: Sud-Ouest Mshl listens to the walls before painting them. An abstract painter originally from France who has been based in Montreal since 2009, he has developed a unique practice: reading the marks of time on a surface—cracks, damaged bricks, exposed drywall—and using them as the starting point for an improvised composition that engages in a dialogue with the site rather than imposing itself upon it. "I consider myself a painter who practices abstraction. When I approach a wall, I first observe its specific 'vital signs'—broken bricks, cement cracks, exposed drywall. I then compose the piece to highlight these characteristics, improvising in response to the location." Arriving from France in 2009, Mshl landed in Montreal without a safety net and quickly immersed himself in the local scene. His encounters with figures such as Nixon, Vilx, Peru, Cabin Huma, and Nélio provided a direct introduction to Montreal’s mural culture, with its unique codes, values, and networks. His work with the organization MU allowed him to gain experience on a wide variety of walls and in diverse contexts, while also forging lasting collaborations. Notably, his partnership with abstract artist Diane Roe—with whom he shares a vision of pictorial improvisation in public spaces—has led to projects of exceptional scale and ambition. Perhaps their most significant collaboration was co-leading a major project paying tribute to Françoise Sullivan, a pioneer of the Quebec *Automatiste* movement. Creating an abstract portrait of an artist who defined spontaneous abstraction in Quebec was a deeply meaningful gesture—a way to weave a thread connecting two generations, two continents, and two interpretations of the act of painting as an expression of freedom. His method—reading a wall’s “vital signs” before painting—is a form of radical respect for the surfaces he works on, an attentiveness to aging and the passage of time that few muralists practice with such rigor.

Mshl, whose practice is connected with Montreal, develops a visual world that can be followed from one wall to another. Captions and archives connected to this body of work document several mural interventions. These points of reference place the image within a practice rather than treating it as an isolated visual.
