L’Original editorial perspective

Marc Olivier Lamothe, a mural practice rooted in place

This work brings together a street-art vocabulary and a urban approach. Its value does not come from applying decoration to architecture: the mural gains meaning through its scale, its surface and the way it is encountered in a real place.

Marc-Olivier Lamothe wants to make you smile — deeply, by reconnecting you with the part of yourself that still loves color for color’s sake, strange forms for their mystery, and naïve creatures for their honesty. Since 2018, more than sixty murals have carried this intention through the streets of Montreal and beyond. > “His mission: to activate people’s imagination, reconnect them with their inner child, and imprint their subconscious with creative and playful energies.” A multidisciplinary visual artist, Marc-Olivier Lamothe entered muralism in 2018 with a clear vision and a hyper-saturated palette that immediately stood apart within the urban art landscape. His creations are instantly recognizable through their intense colors and distinct visual vocabulary: cut-out abstract forms, stylized natural elements, and naïve characters and creatures that seem to emerge from a world where childhood is not a bygone phase, but a permanent state of being. In less than seven years, he has completed more than sixty murals — a remarkable pace reflecting both an intense creative energy and an ability to work across highly varied contexts. His practice extends far beyond walls: handmade artisanal paper, clothing, digital projections, and sculpture all become vehicles for conveying the same artistic message. That message is simple and universal: if someone walking past one of his murals forgets their problems for a moment and smiles, then it is a victory. This ambition — seemingly humble yet profound in its implications — guides every formal decision within a practice that fully embraces its purpose of bringing positivity and care into public space.

Marc Olivier Lamothe, whose practice is connected with montreal, develops a visual world that can be followed from one wall to another. Captions and archives connected to this body of work document several mural interventions. These points of reference place the image within a practice rather than treating it as an isolated visual.
