Chris Dyer, a mural practice rooted in place
This work brings together a street-art vocabulary and a urban approach. Its value does not come from applying decoration to architecture: the mural gains meaning through its scale, its surface and the way it is encountered in a real place.
Active since 2007 · Neighborhood: Le Plateau-Mont-Royal Chris Dyer paints portals. For this Peruvian-Montreal muralist, based on the Plateau since 2007, each wall is an invitation to travel beyond the visible into dimensions inhabited by benevolent entities and by symbols that, in his view, can transform a place’s energy. His work—recognizable for its saturated colors and exuberant psychedelic patterns—has become a cultural landmark in the city’s streets. According to the artist, his murals aim to channel positive interdimensional entities and can also serve as portals to those dimensions, harmonizing the energy of the sites where he works. Born in Peru and rooted in Montreal, Chris Dyer has traveled the world to leave his mark on meaningful surfaces. From the Bob Marley Museum in Jamaica to the Beatles Ashram in Rishikesh, India, via the Balata refugee camp in Palestine and the STRAAT museum in Amsterdam, his projects in more than 25 countries trace a journey that is as spiritual as it is artistic, driven by a deeply holistic worldview. Based on the Plateau-Mont-Royal since 2007, he has forged a lasting bond with a city he affectionately calls his “beloved island.” His murals radiate like contemporary altars, blending Andean iconography, sacred geometries, cosmic eyes, and vibrational intent. For Chris Dyer, painting is not a job; it is a shamanic practice—an act of care for places and the beings who inhabit them. His spiritual approach extends beyond walls. He also develops a practice of painting on canvas, creates works on skateboard decks, and cultivates an online community nourished by reflections on consciousness, love, and interdimensional connection. He embodies a form of street art in which esoteric dimensions and street practice meet in a rare coherence of life.
Chris Dyer, whose practice is connected with Montreal, develops a visual world that can be followed from one wall to another. Captions and archives connected to this body of work document several mural interventions. These points of reference place the image within a practice rather than treating it as an isolated visual.
