L’Original editorial perspective

Doras, a mural practice rooted in place

This work brings together a street-art vocabulary and a urban approach. Its value does not come from applying decoration to architecture: the mural gains meaning through its scale, its surface and the way it is encountered in a real place.

Active since 2017 · Neighborhood: Saint-Michel Doras builds worlds. Whether on the walls of Saint-Michel, in galleries, or within the pages of international illustration anthologies, this Montreal-based artist constructs dense visual universes where history meets mythology, foliage intertwines with metal, and humanity seeks its place between eras and dimensions. His first mural, painted for Cœur de Pirate in 2017, launched a career trajectory that has remained consistently impressive. "Doras creates murals and installations rooted in storytelling and color relationships. His work blends historical ornamentation and iconography with the visual language of contemporary fantasy, paying increasing attention to the emotional intersection of humanity, technology, and mythology." A trained illustrator since 2012, Doras made his first foray into mural art in 2017 on the façade of *Katacombes*—at the corner of Ontario and Saint-Laurent streets—on a commission from musician Cœur de Pirate that launched his career in the public realm. This initial wall established the foundation for a hybrid visual universe in which historical ornaments—botanical, architectural, and heraldic—merge with the visual language of contemporary fantasy to create timeless, evocative compositions. Since then, Doras has produced works in Montreal, across Canada, and internationally, in both urban landscapes and traditional galleries. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies alongside the world’s most renowned illustrators and street artists. Today, represented by Jonathan Levine Projects in New York—one of the most influential galleries in the fields of lowbrow art and illustration—he enjoys international recognition that confirms the uniqueness of a voice developed step-by-step at the intersection of street art and high-level illustration. Her recent shift toward the intersection of humanity, technology, and mythology reflects a practice in constant flux—one unafraid to redefine itself in order to remain true to what truly drives her.

Doras, whose practice is connected with Montreal, develops a visual world that can be followed from one wall to another. Captions and archives connected to this body of work document several mural interventions. These points of reference place the image within a practice rather than treating it as an isolated visual.
