Instagram, TikTok or Pinterest: which network to choose as an artist in 2026
In 30 seconds
Not all networks. One done well is better than five done poorly. For visual artists in 2026: Instagram remains the dominant channel (60 to 70% of artist discovery traffic), TikTok works for visually spectacular creative processes (graffiti, frescoes, sculpture), Pinterest is underestimated for 'home wall art' searches. Choose according to your type of work and your comfort on camera. You can add a second channel after 12 months on the first.
The trap of 'being everywhere'
I've seen artists open 5 accounts in the same month and abandon all 5 within 6 months. Result: 5 dead accounts that discredit them in addition to not having built an audience anywhere.
Choosing a single channel forces depth. You learn its algorithm, you find your winning format, you build a real audience. According to data from Hootsuite Social Media Trends 2025, 78% of successful brands on social media focus 80% of their effort on 1 or 2 channels maximum.
The 3 main networks compared
Instagram, the default channel for visual arts. Strengths: Format designed for visuals, Stories for daily studio life, Reels for short videos, Clickable bio, Present collector audience, Shopping integration. Weaknesses: Organic reach in freefall since 2020, Pressure to publish regularly, Less effective hashtags, Stories disappear in 24h. Ideal for: paintings, photography, illustrations, sculptures, design.
TikTok, the process channel. Strengths: Forgiving algorithm for small accounts, Short video format perfect for process, Younger audience becoming emerging buyers, Strong discoverability via 'For You', Viral trends. Weaknesses: Requires comfort on camera, Less solvent public for premium sales, Rapid production burnout, Algorithm can penalize brutally. Ideal for: graffiti, frescoes, sculpture, engraving, spectacular tactile processes.
Pinterest, the underestimated channel. Strengths: Search platform so intentional traffic, Pins last for years, Qualified audience for 'wall art' searches, Low competition, Clicked site links, SEO optimizes like Google. Weaknesses: Less emotionally engaged audience, Requires specific SEO, Not ideal for 'personality' brands, Low interaction. Ideal for: decorative artists, illustrations, photography, wall art, accessible art.
The 4-question decision grid
- What type of work do you produce? Paintings, photos, illustrations: Instagram priority. Sculptures, tactile processes, frescoes: TikTok or Instagram Reels. Decorative, mural art: Pinterest priority.
- Are you comfortable on camera or in video? Comfortable: TikTok or Instagram Reels. Not comfortable: Static Instagram posts or Pinterest.
- Who is your main target audience? Established collectors (40+): Instagram. Emerging buyers (25-40): Instagram or TikTok. Decorators and residential buyers: Pinterest.
- How much time can you dedicate per week? Less than 2h: Pinterest. 3 to 5h: Instagram. 5h+: TikTok.
The recommended progressive strategy
Year 1: a single channel chosen according to the grid above. Goal: 1,000 to 5,000 engaged followers.
Year 2: addition of a second channel that complements the first. Example: Instagram + Pinterest, or TikTok + Instagram.
Year 3+: potentially a third channel if you have a team or if you master automation. Do not skip steps.
The networks I do not recommend in 2026 for visual artists
- Facebook: aging audience, near-zero organic reach, very low return on effort. Keep only as an Instagram mirror if automated.
- X (Twitter): audience rarely buys art, text format poorly suited to visuals, unstable platform climate.
- LinkedIn: useful for B2B but not for direct sales to private collectors.
- Threads: too young for an artist strategy in 2026, to monitor for 2027-2028.
- BeReal: passed phenomenon, no more strategic relevance.

How to configure cross-posting to publish everywhere in one click
FAQ
Do you need a personal account separate from the artist account?
Yes. Private personal account for your life outside art, public artist account for your practice. Do not mix the two.
Do you have to pay for advertising to break through on Instagram?
Not necessarily the first 12 months. Organic remains viable if you publish really strong content. Beyond that, advertising becomes an accelerator.
How many followers before being taken seriously by a gallery?
Empirical threshold: 4,000 to 8,000 engaged followers. Below, few galleries pay attention. Above, it becomes a favorable signal even if not decisive.
