Shopify, WordPress or Wix: what to choose as an artist in 2026
In 30 seconds
There is no absolute best platform. The choice depends on your sales volume and your need for customization. Under 5 sales per month: Squarespace for a turnkey elegant design. Between 5 and 30 sales per month: Shopify for ecommerce rigor. Beyond that: Shopify Plus or WordPress + WooCommerce for total flexibility. Wix remains viable for artists who want a showcase site without direct online sales.
Why this question is poorly framed
When an artist asks me 'Shopify or WordPress?', I always answer with another question: 'How many artworks do you sell per month?' Without this data, the answer is arbitrary. A platform scaled for 100 sales per month is over-equipped for someone who sells 2. A lightweight platform will quickly saturate for someone selling 30.
The 5 criteria to decide:
- Current and projected monthly sales volume
- Acceptable monthly budget (all inclusive: hosting, plugins, transactions)
- Technical capacity (pure DIY, assisted DIY, or total delegation)
- SEO need (large catalog, multilingual, active blog)
- Integration need (CRM, accounting, shipping)
1. Squarespace, the turnkey elegant option
Use if: you sell 0 to 5 works per month, you want a polished design without touching code, your budget is $25 to $50/month total.
- Strengths: Polished template designs, integrated Squarespace Commerce, decent automatic SEO, hosting included, intuitive editing.
- Weaknesses: Limited customization, no robust third-party extensions, complicated multilingual SEO, difficult to migrate later.
- 2026 Cost: roughly $35 to $60 CAD/month depending on the plan.
2. Shopify, the structured ecommerce option
Use if: you sell 5 to 50 works per month, you want a real online sales infrastructure, your budget is $50 to $150/month.
- Strengths: Integrated Shopify Payments, automatic inventory management, rich App store, solid multilingual, scalable.
- Weaknesses: Transaction fees without Shopify Payments, standardized design, often requires Liquid code to customize.
- 2026 Cost: roughly $50 to $130 CAD/month + transaction commissions (2.9% + $0.30).
3. WordPress + WooCommerce, the flexible option
Use if: you sell 30+ works per month, you want total control over design and functionality, you have technical skills (or a developer).
- Strengths: Near-total flexibility, most powerful SEO (Yoast, Rank Math), plugins for any need, no proprietary transaction fees.
- Weaknesses: Learning curve, active security management (updates, backups), separate hosting, vulnerable to plugin conflicts.
- 2026 Cost: roughly $15 to $50/month (hosting + plugins) + management time.
4. Wix, the simple option without direct sales
Use if: you want a showcase site without managing an online store, your sales volume is very low, you prioritize absolute simplicity.
- Strengths: Easiest to use, decent designs, AI builder, hosting included.
- Weaknesses: Less developed online store, limited SEO (but improving), fewer artistic templates than Squarespace.
- 2026 Cost: roughly $20 to $35 CAD/month.
The quick numerical comparison
- Squarespace: 0 to 5 sales/month, $35-60, Difficulty Easy, Flexibility Medium
- Shopify: 5 to 50 sales/month, $50-130 + commissions, Difficulty Medium, Flexibility Good
- WordPress + WooCommerce: 30+ sales/month, $15-50 + time, Difficulty Hard, Flexibility Maximum
- Wix: Showcase, $20-35, Difficulty Very easy, Flexibility Low
Recommendations according to your profile
- Profile 1, emerging artist selling 0-3 works per month: Squarespace. Quick design, focus on your art.
- Profile 2, growing artist selling 5-15 works per month: Shopify. The ecommerce structure carries you.
- Profile 3, established artist with large/international catalog: WordPress + WooCommerce. If technical resources.
- Profile 4, elite artist not selling direct: Squarespace or Wix. Simple showcase site (sales via galleries).
Migration between platforms
Common question: 'If I change platforms in 2 years, do I lose everything?' Answer: you will keep your content (photos, texts), but your SEO will take 3 to 6 months to reorganize. So choosing well at the start is better than migrating.
- Squarespace to Shopify: easy, several automated services
- WordPress to Shopify: medium, migration plugins available
- Anything to WordPress: easy from any platform

FAQ
Can I start with Shopify and migrate to WordPress later?
Yes but heavy. Better to choose Shopify if you project volume eventually.
Is SEO really worse on Shopify than WordPress?
Marginally, yes. But unless you aim for a lot of organic blog traffic, the difference is negligible.
Do I need a separate domain name?
Always. Buy your domain-name.com directly from a registrar (Namecheap or Cloudflare) and point it to your platform. Keep control of the domain.
