Marie-Luce Maupetit

Otterburn Park, Canada

•

1962

Marie-Luce Maupetit is a visual artist and author whose work joyfully engages with surrealism. Weaving dreams and mystery into the fabric of everyday life, she enjoys reimagining images and repurposing everyday objects with a poetic touch tinged with the unexpected. Her art draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, guided by a fertile imagination that refuses to be confined. Lulled from childhood by the witchcraft stories of her grandmother from the Vendée region, she has retained from that time an unbridled love for storytelling, the memory of her roots, and the paths less traveled. ...

Fragmented

Let the gesture sketch lines on the fragmented background of a puzzle and let universes rise to the surface.

A Second Wind

As a child, Marie-Luce Maupetit collected thousands of treasures during her wanderings and created imaginary worlds. As an adult, she still collects found objects, fragments of nature, and gives them a second life.

Goddesses

Marie-Luce Maupetit brings to life an entire personal mythology by creating small-format goddess sculptures, a kind of talisman. Found objects, fragments of nature inspire the artist to create female figures in polymer clay, which is worked to give the illusion of precious materials.

Unstable Geographies, Series on Road Maps

Originally designed to guide, replaced by GPS, road maps become, for Marie-Luce Maupetit, spaces for wandering. One can get lost in the meanders of their multiple routes, but one can also find oneself there, inventing unstable geographies, populated by hybrid figures, fragmentary stories, and personal mythologies.

A Drawing a Day

For this series, Marie-Luce Maupetit drew on blank tarot cards. Their small size invited intimacy and contemplation. Marie-Luce worked with India ink, splashing water onto the cards, then the ink. The shapes that appeared guided her and inspired different strokes. The red circle and yellow dot present on each drawing create a link between this body of work while adding a touch of color.
