Montreal, Canada

Active since 2011 — Neighborhood: Villeray Since 2011, this Villeray-based muralist has explored the edges of the system—the abandoned sites and forgotten surfaces—inscribing an unexpected, persistent presence across Canada and beyond. He explores ways of living and flourishing in the cracks of a collapsing system. THE APPROACH

Algue began in Montréal’s streets and derelict spots, those interstitial spaces between two functions, two owners, two gazes. There he refined an aesthetic and a philosophy: finding beauty and vitality in what society leaves aside, asserting that life always finds a way, even within structures that seem to leave no room for it. This vision, as political as it is artistic, reflects a generation that has given up on reforming institutions from within, seeking emancipation in the margins, the interstices, and the pockets of freedom not yet colonized by surveillance. His practice has taken him beyond Montréal, making him one of the few artists to have left a mark in every province and territory of Canada—from New Brunswick to Newfoundland, from British Columbia to Yukon—an exceptional national odyssey that excludes only Nunavut. It forms a human and artistic mapping of Canadian margins that few have surveyed with such method.
